Holiday Cookie Joy

There’s something magical about the holidays. The twinkling lights, the cozy nights by the fire, and of course, the sweet smells wafting from the kitchen. For me, the holidays wouldn’t be the same without baking cookies. Not just for my family, but for friends, neighbors, and sometimes even strangers. It’s become my favorite holiday tradition, and honestly, it’s not just about the cookies—it’s about the joy they bring.

There’s this moment when I start mixing the dough, usually with some holiday music playing in the background, that I feel all the stress from school and life just melt away. There’s something so comforting about measuring flour, cracking eggs, and watching everything come together. And when the first batch goes into the oven and that warm, buttery smell fills the air? Instant holiday vibes.

But the best part? Sharing them. I’ve always believed that cookies are like little bundles of happiness. Whether it’s classic chocolate chip (my specialty!) or sugar cookies decorated with way too much frosting, there’s something about handing someone a plate of homemade cookies that makes them light up. Sometimes it’s a simple thank-you for a teacher who’s gone above and beyond or a surprise drop-off to a neighbor who’s been having a tough time. I usually bake a dozen and give to any new family I babysit for as an extra treat for the family. Seeing people smile over something so simple is the best gift I could give—and receive.

I’ve realized that baking cookies isn’t just about making something delicious. It’s about the love and care you pour into each batch. It’s about creating memories, like when my little brother sneaks a cookie before they’ve even cooled, or when my dad sneaks a scoop of batter from the bowl in the sink before I do my clean-up.  And it’s about letting people know they matter.

The holidays can be busy and overwhelming, but baking has taught me to slow down and appreciate the small things. I’ve learned that a simple act of kindness—like giving someone cookies—can make a huge difference. Plus, it’s just plain fun.

So, if you’ve never tried it, grab a recipe, crank up some holiday tunes, and start baking. You don’t have to be a pro (trust me, some of my cookies have turned out… interesting). It’s the thought that counts, and I promise, the joy you’ll spread—and feel—is totally worth it.
